The 2024 April NZCYT Chinese Cultural Holiday Programme kicked off today! The first day is always a bit chaotic, and some of the new children may take a little time to adjust. However, thanks to our well-established system and procedures, under the guidance of our teachers and youth volunteer leaders, all the children quickly settled into their groups. Just look at how much everyone is enjoying the rhythm games!
[Day One] Training our youth volunteer leaders is a key goal of the holiday programme. This free training enhances skills like leadership, teamwork, safety management, child care, crisis handling, activity design, and more. Volunteers also learn Chinese and experience traditional Chinese culture in an immersive setting, gaining valuable soft skills for their future.
After each day’s activities, we review and prepare for the next day, learning from mistakes and encouraging each other. Plus, our tasty lunches are a favourite among the youth leaders!
[Day Two] The children were introduced to Peking Opera, guided by members of the New Zealand Baiyun Peking Opera Society. President Mr. Fu described their role as “cultural ambassadors,” helping the children move from experiencing to understanding and embracing Peking Opera.
The volunteers and Peking Opera enthusiasts worked hard to create a programme that is both engaging and educational, tailored to the children’s interests. The outcome was wonderful—each child got to experience the art and even painted their own Peking Opera mask to take home.
[Day Three] In the morning, the children learned practical knot-tying skills and safety rescue techniques for emergencies, practising through fun competition games.
In the afternoon, we all went on a hike along the coast to a playground where the kids had a blast. Amazingly, every child, even the four- and five-year-olds, completed the entire hike with the help of their older peers. It was fantastic!
[Day Four] In the morning, the children learned how to bake bread. The instructor carefully planned and prepared the session so that every child could enjoy the hands-on experience of making their own bread. The freshly baked bread smelled delicious, and we got to enjoy it for our afternoon tea!
[Day Five]
